About Tansy

Well-known Dye Herb

Together with the stain, the flower heads produce a dark yellow.

Gynecology

In ancient times it was used in high doses as an abortion agent and in smaller doses as a birth starter or aid.

Garden Helper

In the garden, a water extract or manure from tansy is an effective means of combating pests such as aphids and fleas.

Moth Protection

The dried perennials have been used in wardrobes for some time to prevent moth infestation. A side effect is that the clothing has a somewhat deterrent effect on annoying insects when you are out and about.

Anthelmintics

The main area of application in the Middle Ages was as a worming agent, hence the old name worm fern. To do this, the yellow flowers were boiled in milk or wine and then drunk. Today there are less harmful solutions that are to be preferred.

Pagan protection herb

The tansy was one of the main plants in a tuft, which was mainly used to ward off evil spirits and to protect against lightning strikes. In some areas the tansy was called "Donnerkraut (Thunder-herb)" or "Blitzkraut (Lightning-Herb)". This indicates a connection to the Germanic god of thunder, Donar (Thor).

Tansy and death

Tansy was already used by the Egyptians for mummification. Tansy bouquets or wreaths were also placed in coffins in Europe. The perennial, which was also often planted in cemeteries in the past, may have had a cultic significance in the event of death. As a defense and protective herb, the tansy should accompany the transition into the "other world".
